Proposed area for Mining Exploration Lease
EL 44/2010 - 80 square kilometres in the
 vicinity of Cygnet, Wattle Grove,
 Petcheys Bay and Lymington

IMPORTANT!
- This is not an anti-mining web site. We appreciate that mining provides the raw materials which make modern societies and their attendant technologies possible. We do however believe that mining should not be conducted at the expense of landowners rights and/or significant social and natural values (our quality of life).

General Remarks - Saying No To Mining
Did You Hear About ... ?

Mining exploration leases are constantly being 'offered' by Australian state and federal governments. The states each have their own legislation relating to how exploration and mining leases are tendered, approved and managed.

Though there may be a mandatory legislative requirement for public 'notifications' (via newspapers), this stops short of requiring the potential miner or relevant government body of having to contact individual residents, land owners and/or affected communities directly via mail or phone.

Thereby, if a resident or land titleholder misses the notification posted in a major newspaper's 'Notices' section, there may not be a possibility of a formal objection (which must generally take place within 28 days of the notification). Too bad if you are away when the notification is published, or just don't read newspapers.

As a result the landowner/resident may be completely unaware that an exploration or mining lease has even been issued ... until they are notified that said exploration or mining will commence on their property (generally with only 14 days written notice required).

This is a situation that we really need to change!
Democracy and Freedom of Speech comes at a Price

Another burning issue with many residents of the Cygnet area in Tasmania, is the state government's requirement for an application fee ($27.20 at time of writing) to lodge an official objection to an exploration lease application.

Some have chosen not to pay the fee in protest, opting instead to write to the minister for Energy and resources. Unfortunately this means that their objection will not be on the public record and will not require mediation. In other words, having no official standing, it can be largely ignored.

In short ... If you don't want your life and lifestyle to be figuratively and literally bulldozed out of existence ... Speak Up!
